It’s September! A new month. A new season.

Children return to school. Most workers are back at the desk or the shop-floor after the summer holiday period. It’s not just that the date on the calendar has changed; the air temperature has dropped a few degrees, and those long summer days are beginning to shorten. It’s September!

The next significant holiday for most of us will be Christmas – over three and a half months away. Between now and then there’s much that can be done. Lots that can be achieved. People to get to know. Prayers to be prayed. Love to be shown. Laughter to be shared. Goals to be met.

This is a season for action. For doing the business. For getting on. For getting going. It’s not time to sit back and dawdle. It’s time to step up and step out.

A trend I’ve noticed in the UK over the last few years is that many are increasingly slow to step up in September. They are sluggish about getting going. Like they’re half asleep. Ask them what their plans are for the coming season and they can’t tell you. Ask them about their children and things coming up for them and they’re not sure. Ask them what’s going on in their church or local community and they don’t know. They’re slow off the blocks in September, and don’t really get going until the third or fourth week. I suspect the reason is that many like to rest in August and refuse to think about the autumn season until after their holidays, and then September begins and it takes a while to catch up. But the reality is that September is here! The new season has begun.

So if there’s some planning to do, now is the time to do it. If there’s some praying to do before decisions are agreed, now is the time to do it. If there are some adjustments to be made or changes to be put in place in your life, now is the time to do it. If there’s need to go through diaries with loved ones, friends and colleagues to help shape the season, now is the time to do it.

As for me, I’ll be picking up all sorts of things again at The Belfrey, now that September is here. We’ll also be moving house between now and Christmas. And I’m aiming to do a regular blog from Luke’s gospel – sharing some fresh discoveries I’ve been making about following Jesus. So look out for that in the coming days and weeks.

September is a new season. A time to be working and to be doing much good so that, as it says in Galatians 6:9, ‘at the proper season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up’. So let’s wake up. Let’s not give up. Let’s step up.

It’s time to step up into September.
